Word Analysis
The meanings of over 60% of multi-syllabic words can be determined by knowing the meaning of the word parts (Miller & Veatch, 2012). Research shows that when students are taught about the process of creating words, they are able to decode the meaning of words based upon their parts (Padak, Newton, Rasinski, & Newton, 2008).
Word analysis is simply that - the breaking down of a word into syllables and their meanings. When explicitly instructed on how to break apart words, students are able to grasp the meanings of multi-syllabic words in a more meaningful way, which results in increased comprehension.
