Pre-Teaching
Pre-teaching academic vocabulary introduces students to important concepts before instruction begins. Teachers introduce unfamiliar terms to students before reading the textbook and make students aware of terms they will encounter as they read (Feldman & Kinsella, 2003). Other research suggests that pre-teaching vocabulary significantly improves retention of information where targeted words appeared (Carney, Anderson, Blackburn, & Blessing, 1984) and can also result in the use of the targeted terms in students' writing samples (Amaral, Garrison, & Klentschy, 2002).
